Top Ten 10 Things To Consider Before You Choose A VETERINARIAN
in Phoenix AZ

------------------------------

1)   IS THE VETERINARIAN BOARD CERTIFIED OR A MEMBER OF THE AMERICAN ANIMAL HOSPITAL ASSOCIATION?
The American Board of Veterinary Practitioners and the American Animal Hospital Association  are good resources to check when researching veterinarians.

2)   DO THE FEES FIT YOUR BUDGET, AND/OR ARE DISCOUNTS FOR SENIOR CITIZENS OR MULTI-PET HOUSEHOLDS AVAILABLE?

Don’t hesitate to call and ask about the fee structures for caring for your dog or cat. Understanding the fees in advance will assist you in planning for routine vet visits, puppy shots, etc. See if payment plans are an option for expensive surgeries or treatments.  Fees can vary and some veterinarians do offer discounts in specific situations like Senior, Military or Multi Pet households.  It doesn’t hurt to ask.

3)   ARE X-RAYS, ULTRASOUNDS, BLOODWORK, EKG'S, ENDOSCOPY AND OTHER DIAGNOSTICS DONE IN-HOUSE OR REFERRED TO A SPECIALIST?

It can be helpful to have any tests performed on your pet there at the same facility and avoid unnecessary stress for your ill pet by having to take him or her to another location for required tests.

4)   DOES THE VETERINARIAN OFFER EMERGENCY SERVICES OR DO THEY REQUIRE APPOINTMENTS IN ADVANCE?

Ask in advance what their policy is regarding emergency services.  Most veterinarians do refer to a 24 Hour Emergency Veterinary hospital after hours but provide time in the normal schedule for same day emergencies.  Find out which 24 Hour Emergency Veterinary Hospital they refer to and their proximity to your location.  Some veterinarians will provide emergency services in specific situations, like birthing, when planned ahead.

5)   ARE EVENING AND WEEKEND APPOINTMENTS AVAILABLE?

Again, ask in advance what their appointment schedule is.  Most veterinarians do offer evening or weekend appointments.  Knowing which do may aide you in deciding on which veterinarian to choose.

6)   IS THE FACILITY CLEAN, COMFORTABLE AND WELL ORGANIZED?

It is important to inspect the facility that will be caring for your dog or cat.  You are embarking on a long term relationship with your veterinarian.  It can be helpful to check out the facility before committing to the appointment.

7)   BE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND YOUR POTENTIAL VETERINARIANS FEES FOR ROUTINE SERVICES LIKE CHECK-UPS OR VACCINATIONS?
Understanding the fees in advance will assist you in planning for routine vet visits. Be sure to see if payment plans are an option for expensive surgeries or treatments.

8)   DOES YOUR POTENTIAL VETERINARIAN OFFER ADDITIONAL SERVICES SUCH AS BOARDING AND/OR GROOMING?

Many veterinarians also provide additional services that you may require for your pet.  It can be convenient to choose a vet that also provides those services your pet may need.

9)   CHECK THE RANGE OF ANIMALS THE PRACTICE DEALS WITH.
You may want to find a specialist if you have an unusual pet.

10)   COMMUNICATION IS KEY!

Make sure you are communicating your needs effectively and bring any concerns to their attention as quickly as possible.  Good communication can make the difference between a less than desirable experience your Veterinarian and a GREAT one!
